Recovery

Since the 1980s, Australian Fur Seal numbers have been recovering. Over a 20 year period, the number of pups born each year has almost doubled. Currently, there are still less seals when compared to before sealing began. We do not know if the population could return to the pre-sealing levels.

Although the Australian Fur Seal population is recovering, there are still some threats to Australian Fur Seals, see 'Threats to Seals' in About Australian Fur Seals section.
