Food chain

The most common fish Australian Fur Seals eat is redbait, whose scientific name Emmelichthys nitidus. Redbait eat marine invertebrates (zooplankton), like the Nyctiphanes australis. In turn, the invertebrates eat phytoplankton which they filter from the water.

Seals also eat squid. Squid hunt for fish. The fish eaten by squid might eat smaller fish, marine invertebrates or seaweed, see 'In the Food-Chain' in Research Data section.
